There is the usual camping where you just pitch a tent in a campsite and you have a place to spend your night, hotel campsites nowadays are even doing all that for you then there is the other kind of camping where you spend several days in a forest, park or mountain for hiking, exploration and other adventures.
Because camping takes place in remote and wild environments, its good to be well prepared to make your camping experience better.
Do a short study of the area
A small research can be very helpful before you start your adventure. By using Google search and Google maps you will have an idea of the region’s terrain, weather and accessibility. This knowledge will help you to be sure of some of the things you need to carry to avoid too much baggage.
a) Duffel bag
You will need a place to put all your items and a Duffel bag is the kind of bag you need for such activities. The reason is Duffel bags are easy to carry, can fit it in squeezed carriers, their shape and sizes can accommodate a tent and sleeping bag and also a pair of shoes.

b) Tent and sleeping bag
A camping tent and a sleeping bag are the most obvious camping equipments. If you don’t have them, you can buy them online on Jumia or kilimall. A three person tent will cost you around Ksh 5000 while a good sleeping bag will not cost you more than Ksh 3000.
To ease the hassle of pitching your tent, you can opt to buy an automatic tent. It has no additional cost and is available just like the usual tents.
c) Self-catering equipments
During camping the only option is to self cater, There are campsites that provide most things e.g utensils and cookers. If not, you will have to carry your own. This items can include lighters, cooking pots/pans (specially made for camping), thermo Flasks and bags to keep your dishes warm.
d) First aid kit
Camping is an outdoor activity and sometimes accidents happen. It is also possible for one to have certain medical condition e.g diabetes or allergies. In such cases a first aid kit can be very helpful. First aid kits can be bought through a chemist but a first aid bag can be bought online or offline in a supermarket.
When buying a first aid kit, always remember to include medications that are in line with your condition. For example, if you are asthmatic, adding an inhaler to your first aid kit is not a bad idea.
e) Sanitizers
Soaps, towels, tissues, toothbrushes and toothpastes are easy to forget but they are very important. To make your camping bearable, make sure you add this items to your bag.
Other items
The following items are not necessities but they can make camping easier.
- Binoculars: Apart from giving you a closer view with their zooming power, Binoculars are a great tool for ensuring yours safety. Using the lenses you can see an oncoming animal within a distance of up to 900 meters
- Torch. Its very hard to find light bulbs in the wild and even when a campsite supports them with electricity one will need light in the sleeping.
- Umbrella. Nowadays umbrellas are small enough to fit in a handbag and carrying one will shelter you from rain.
- Groceries. For self catering, you will need something to cook. This can be flour, vegetables or meat. If not you can carry canned food to avoid too much hassle
- Beverages. With Coffee, cocoa or tea brewed with milk powder and sugar all one needs is hot water to stay refreshed amid camping and cold weather.
